Meta Invests in Eyewear Giant EssilorLuxottica to Accelerate AI Wearables Strategy
Tech giant Meta acquired approximately 3% stake in EssilorLuxottica SA, the world’s largest eyewear manufacturer, for around €3 billion on July 9. The deal triggered strong market reactions – EssilorLuxottica’s American Depositary Receipts surged 6.9% that day. Bloomberg reports Meta plans to increase its stake to 5%, demonstrating its strategic ambitions in smart wearables.
This investment deepens the four-year technical partnership between the two companies. Following their 2021 collaboration on Ray-Ban smart glasses with cameras and AI assistant, they jointly launched new Oakley-branded smart glasses last month. EssilorLuxottica CEO Francesco Milleri had hinted at Meta’s investment interest last year, which has now materialized.
With Meta aggressively advancing AI R&D, smart glasses are positioned as “the next-generation key platform for human-computer interaction.” Through deep integration of hardware and AI assistants, Meta aims to build an immersive ecosystem blending physical and digital worlds. This strategic investment will significantly accelerate Meta’s expansion in smart wearables.
