Meta

Meta’s New Smart Glasses to Unlock “Super Intelligence”
Meta Platforms founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched the company’s first smart glasses with a built-in display, describing it as a wearable device capable of replacing smartphones and crucial to his full commitment to “superintelligence.”
According to comprehensive reports from the Financial Times and CNBC, Zuckerberg introduced the “Meta Ray-Ban Display” smart glasses at the Meta Connect flagship event on September 17. The glasses can display text messages, video calls, or responses from the Meta AI assistant on one lens.
Zuckerberg hopes that smart glasses will eventually replace Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android smartphones, becoming widely adopted computing devices. At the event, he stated, “To enable a computing device to see what you see, hear what you hear, converse with you all day, and generate user interfaces in real time within your field of view, glasses are the only viable form factor.”
Priced at $799 and set to go on sale later this month, the glasses can be controlled via a wristband that detects subtle hand movements. Zuckerberg described it as “the world’s first mainstream neural interface.” He emphasized that wearables are the “ideal form factor” for “personal superintelligence” (referring to AI that surpasses human intelligence).
However, a minor hiccup occurred during the demonstration when Zuckerberg failed to successfully answer a call from Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth. He joked that he had practiced “hundreds of times” without issue, attributing the problem to unstable WiFi connectivity.
In its effort to catch up with competitors in the AI field, Meta recently reorganized its AI team for the fourth time in six months, renaming it the “Meta Superintelligence Lab.”
Meta also updated its existing Ray-Ban smart glasses series with improved battery life, speakers, and camera performance. However, during the live demonstration, the glasses failed to correctly respond to wearers’ questions. The new Meta smart glasses are manufactured by Chinese supplier Goertek.
