Goertek Deepens Ties with Meta Supply Chain, Bets on AI Smart Glasses Sector
Hardware manufacturer Goertek is steadily strengthening its core position in the AI smart glasses industry and Meta’s supply chain through strategic. Goertek has taken a controlling stake in Shanghai Aoni Laite, a core optical component manufacturer for smart glasses, and facilitated financing for its acquisition of Plessey, Meta’s UK-based optical supplier, securing key positions across the upstream and downstream segments.

As a crucial partner for Meta, Goertek not only mass-produces the Quest series VR headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses but has also secured production orders for the new-generation Hypernova smart glasses while supplying multiple core components. Although Meta has been diversifying its supply chain and began producing some Quest devices overseas this year, Goertek remains a difficult-to-replace core partner due to the stability and reliability of its key component supply.

Notably, potential friction arose during their collaboration when Goertek previously launched a budget VR glasses model on e-commerce platforms with functionality similar to Quest, prompting Meta executives to consider legal action, though no lawsuit was ultimately filed.

Meanwhile, Meta has continually adjusted its strategic direction since acquiring Oculus in 2014: announcing a multibillion-dollar investment in the “metaverse” in 2021, and recently shifting focus toward AI-driven wearables. Additionally, Meta is deepening cooperation with the U.S. government—its Chief Technology Officer received a Department of Defense appointment to advise on military AI applications and partnered with defense technology group Anduril to collaborate on VR/AR headset design.
