Goertek Optics Debuts 50° FOV Silicon Carbide Waveguide at SPIE XR Event
At the SPIE AR|VR|MR conference, a premier international XR industry event held in the United States on January 20 (local time), Goertek Optics showcased a range of cutting-edge optical solutions and globally debuted its breakthrough product: the 50° field-of-view (FOV) silicon carbide etched full-color waveguide display module, the F50Se.

For years, the FOV of AR waveguides has been limited by the refractive index of glass substrate materials. By adopting a silicon carbide substrate with an ultra-high refractive index of 2.65, Goertek Optics has overcome this physical limitation at the material level, making it possible to achieve a 50° large FOV with a single full-color waveguide. To address the challenges of processing silicon carbide, the company innovatively applied a dry etching process, reducing the overall waveguide reflectivity to below 5% and effectively resolving persistent industry issues such as ghosting and rainbow artifacts. When paired with a micro-projection engine, the module achieves an eye-facing brightness of over 1,500 nits, providing core hardware support for large-field AR viewing and interactive applications.

Beyond this major new product, Goertek Optics also showcased a complete product matrix covering diverse scenarios:

  • F30Se: An ultra-lightweight silicon carbide module
  • F15Pi: A resin waveguide module designed for all-day wear
  • F25Ge: Engineered for outdoor high-brightness environments with a peak luminance of 4,200 nits
  • Latest Pancake module: Achieves an 85.5° large FOV and diopter adjustment while significantly reducing thickness, offering a practical path toward lighter and thinner headset designs

As the XR industry reaches a critical stage of consumer market adoption, display performance and device form factors remain core constraints. Through this demonstration of systematic solutions, Goertek Optics highlights its integrated innovation capabilities in materials, processes, and design, aiming to enable more efficient and comfortable applications of AR/MR devices across entertainment, office work, industrial, and other scenarios. Moving forward, the company stated it will continue to focus on core technology R&D, driving optical modules toward thinner, clearer, and more accessible solutions.

Summary:
At SPIE XR, Goertek Optics unveiled the F50Se, a 50° FOV silicon carbide waveguide module delivering 1,500+ nits brightness, eliminating ghosting and rainbow artifacts. This breakthrough advances AR optics toward wider, clearer, and more practical applications.
