Next-Gen Meta Ray-Ban AI Glasses Receive FCC Certification, Launch Imminent
Meta, in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, is set to launch its next-generation Ray-Ban AI smart glasses. The news comes from two new device certification documents filed with the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) this month, indicating that the tested units are production versions and a launch is imminent. Previously, Meta’s second-generation product was released about a month after receiving FCC certification, so expectations for this new launch are high.
Although details in the filings are redacted, key information can still be gleaned. The two new models are named “RayBan Meta Scriber” and “RayBan Meta Blazer,” with Blazer available in standard and large sizes. The new glasses will still come with a dedicated charging case. The new model numbers (RW7001 and RW7002) differ significantly from existing models (RW4000 series), suggesting a major hardware architecture upgrade, possibly with a newer chipset. Additionally, the new devices support Wi-Fi 6 UNII-4 bands, enhancing data transmission stability for live streaming and real-time video-dependent AI features.
Ray-Ban AI glasses have become one of Meta’s most successful consumer electronics products. According to EssilorLuxottica’s financial reports, sales of the glasses exceeded 7 million units last year, a sharp increase from just 2 million units combined in 2023–2024. To meet surging demand, Meta has asked EssilorLuxottica to boost annual production capacity to 20 million units or more by the end of 2026, with potential further increases to 30 million units if demand remains strong. Mark Zuckerberg confirmed during an earnings call that smart glasses sales have quadrupled, making them one of the fastest-growing consumer electronics products in history.
With the product’s success, Meta is reallocating strategic resources. The company is shifting Reality Labs’ future investment focus entirely toward glasses and wearables. This year, Meta has cut about 1,000 XR-related employees, closed several VR game studios, and temporarily paused its VR Horizon Worlds project (later postponed due to user feedback).
According to Counterpoint Research, AI smart glasses accounted for 88% of global smart glasses shipments in the second half of 2025. Meta further solidified its leading position in the period, increasing its market share to 82%. North America remains the largest market (37% of global shipments), while Western Europe’s share surged to 30%. Meanwhile, affordable AI glasses from places like Huaqiangbei are rapidly capturing the mass market with high cost-effectiveness, indicating spillover effects from market education.
Meta’s partnership with EssilorLuxottica began in 2019, and the first Ray-Ban branded smart glasses were launched in 2021. The product form has evolved from initial “smart audio glasses” into “all-day wearable computing” devices integrating AI assistants, displays, and cameras. Last September, Meta released its first AR glasses with a display, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, priced at $799, which for the first time displays text directly on the right lens. The product is also paired with the innovative Meta Neural Band, an EMG wristband control system that uses muscle electrical signals for touchless operation. In terms of features, the new generation supports real-time subtitles, multilingual translation, voice-to-text, and smart Q&A, fully integrated with Meta’s ecosystem (WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram). Camera capabilities have also been upgraded from 1080p to 3K resolution, with new time-lapse and slow-motion features.
Summary:
Meta’s next-gen Ray-Ban AI glasses (RW7001/RW7002) received FCC certification, supporting Wi-Fi 6. Sales exceeded 7M units last year, with a production capacity target of 20M units, positioning them as a key AI wearable device.
